Academy · module 0 — the starting point

How to read a candle?

Every trading chart is made of the same atom: the candle. Four pieces of information, two colours, two wicks — and once you can read it, you know what really happened during each minute, each hour, each day of market. This is the absolute starting point. Zero prerequisites.

READING: ~5 MIN · PREREQUISITES: NONE

§1The anatomy — four prices, one story

A candle summarises everything price did over a fixed duration (1 minute, 15 minutes, 4 hours… your choice). It records exactly four prices:

HIGH the peak reached CLOSE the price at the end of the round OPEN the price at the start LOW the floor reached ← THE BODY between open and close ← WICK ← WICK
One candle = one round: where it started, how high it went, how low it went, where it ended.

The body (the rectangle) runs from open to close — the net result of the round. The wicks (the thin lines) show how far price ventured… before turning back. Territory visited, then abandoned.

§2The three faces of a candle

Colour says only one thing — who won this round:

open close

Close ABOVE the open. Buyers won the round: price ended higher than it started. Nothing more — and above all nothing about the next round.

open close

Close BELOW the open. Sellers won the round: price ended lower than it started. Careful: on a red candle the open sits at the top of the body — the number one source of beginner confusion.

open ≈ close

Open and close nearly identical, tiny body. Price travelled both ways… to end where it began. A draw — nobody is in control. Common inside ranges (you will see that in the next course).

§3The wicks — abandoned territory

The wick is often the most valuable information: it shows a level the market tested and then rejected during the round.

Buyers pushed price up to here… …and sellers took it all back before the end.
Long upper wick + low close = a high tested and violently refused. The full story of the round, in one drawing.

Last piece of the puzzle: the timeframe. An "M15" candle tells a 15-minute round, an "H4" candle a 4-hour round. Same prices, same rules — only the length of the round changes. One big H4 candle contains sixteen M15 candles: zooming in is just cutting the same story into shorter chapters.

The classic beginner mistake

Believing a green candle announces that "it is going up". A candle describes the round that just ended — never the next one. It is a report, not a prophecy. All serious market reading (structure, regime, zones) is built on sequences of candles, never on one isolated candle. That is exactly what the next course is about.

§4Test yourself

1. On a RED candle, where is the opening price?
2. A long wick above a small body means:
3. A green candle just closed. What does that guarantee for the next candle?

What now?

You can read the atom. The next course assembles atoms into molecules: the highs, the lows, and THE question 90% of beginners never ask — is the market going up, going down, or standing still?
