The Fair Value Gap

In one sentence

A void left by a move that was too fast: a price area the market crossed without really trading in it.

high of wick 1low of wick 3 FVG 123 the wicks themselves do not overlap
The extremes of candle 1 and candle 3 do not overlap: the space between them is the FVG.

In detail

An FVG is read across three consecutive candles. When the move is violent enough, the extreme of the first candle and that of the third do not overlap: a space is left in the middle, which the second candle crossed in one stroke.

That space embodies an imbalance: at those prices, very little trading took place. Some participants had no time to act, and the area remains unfinished.

An FVG is said to be filled when price later comes back through that area. How many FVGs get filled, how fast, and under which conditions: those are questions of measurement, not belief.

FVG and opening gap

Fair Value Gap

A void created within continuous quoting, by the speed of the move.

Opening gap

A void created by quoting stopping and restarting, typically over the weekend.

The classic mistake

Treating an FVG as an automatic entry signal. It is an area of interest, to be weighed against context — nothing forces price to come back.
