Non-repainting

SMC glossary

Non-repainting

In one sentence

An indicator whose signals, once displayed, never disappear or move.

Placed at close, never retouched: the history shows what you would have seen.

In detail

Some indicators redraw their history: a signal appears, then vanishes when later candles prove it wrong. The past chart then looks perfect — and matches nothing anyone would have seen live.

A non-repainting indicator places its signals at candle close and never touches them again. What the history shows is exactly what a user would have seen at the time.

The price to pay is delay: waiting for the close, and sometimes for a pivot to confirm, means displaying later. It is the choice between being late and honest, or instant and misleading.

Repaint and delay

Repainting

The signal changes after the fact. The history lies.

Confirmation delay

The signal arrives late, but never changes. The history tells the truth.

The classic mistake

Judging an indicator by the beauty of its history. A perfect history is often the symptom of repainting, not of quality.
