SMC glossary

The take-profit

In one sentence

An order placed in advance that closes a winning position at a defined price.

Placed on an objective level, not on a desired amount.

In detail

The mirror of the stop-loss, the take-profit sets the exit on the gain side. Defined in advance, it avoids the two classic pitfalls: exiting too early out of nerves, or too late out of greed.

It is placed on an objective chart level — a previous high, an identified zone, the boundary of a range — not on a desired amount.

The ratio between the stop distance and the take-profit distance determines the risk / reward of the trade.

Take-profit and mental target

Take-profit

A real order, live on the market, executing without you.

Mental target

An intention. It moves as price advances — which is precisely the problem.

The classic mistake

Setting your take-profit on an amount in euros rather than a chart level. The market does not know about your month-end target.
