Glossaire SMC

HH, HL, LH, LL

SMC glossary

HH, HL, LH, LL

In one sentence

The four labels that describe each high and each low relative to the point of the same kind before it.

HHHH HLHL
Each point gets its label by comparison with the point of the same kind before it.

In detail

The rule fits in one line: a high is compared to the previous high, a low is compared to the previous low. Never one against the other.

HH (higher high): a high above the previous one. HL (higher low): a low above the previous one. LH (lower high): a lower high. LL (lower low): a lower low.

Memory trick: the first letter gives the comparison (H = higher, L = lower), the second gives the kind of point (H = high, L = low). So HL is a low, which is higher.

Put together, these labels give the market reading: HH + HL forms an uptrend, LH + LL a downtrend, any mix is a range.

HL and LH

HL — higher low

A LOW that is higher. A sign of buying strength: the pullback stops earlier.

LH — lower high

A HIGH that is lower. A sign of fading: the rally fails lower.

The classic mistake

Comparing a high to a low. It is mistake number one, and it makes the whole reading incoherent: you end up with labels that mean nothing.
